the only Mary McPhail I found born in Inverary was christened on 6th August 1802 - parents were Alexander McPhail and Janet McDugald or was McPhail the married name?

by the way the scottish system only came into being in 1855. The english one was introduced in 1837 but with the delay the scottish system was able to improve on the english one when it was finally introduced so you get a huge amount of extra information on the certificates. Sadly though I think that before 1855 not everything was registered so it can be a bit hit and miss. Sometimes you get a very conscientious (or vindictive!) registrar who will record an event in great detail. In others such as a marriage you might only get so and so and such and such were regularly married and the date. No parents names or anything. Have you tried looking for monumental inscriptions? i have just ordered a couple of booklets from the Aberdeen branch of their family history society and I am hoping that some of my rellies may be detailed in there. Also I will be trying the tax registers next to flesh out some of the details. Maybe the ecclesiastical courts too might help - they seem to have been very keen on penance then! Regards Abigail

I had to look in the Old Parish Registers to find the details I was after and I did this when I was in West Register House in Edinburgh. They have it all on computer for you to look up and then you use the micro film to follow it back.. I thought that Scotlands People had just added a load of records? Where did he come from? Abigail

deaths only go back to 1855 I have looked everywhere I even found his both marriages and his death that is how I found out he was married to both I even found all the first familys children and only 2 kids from 2nd marriage though on his death John signed it can't find his birth either complicated to say the least. The scottish site is good just wish they would go further back on the deaths

I thought Scotlands People went back a lot further than that, but that the registration rules are different, so that the switch between registration certs and Parish records is in a different year. Christine

I imagine you will have to go through the parish burial registers. Not sure how this is organised in Scotland, but in england they are in the county records offices. nell
