the best format for storing would be tiff and saved as an RGB file - not cmyk as the scope of the colours are far better The compression of a jpeg file really shouldnt affect the quality in any noticeable manner and a jpeg of a rgb would be fine A high quality image in publishing is normaly reproduced at 300dpi (most glossy mags are at this res) and the difference between 300 and 600 in invisible to the naked eye. It only becomes relevant if you're intending to blow the image up to a great size i.e. you're scanning an a4 size and you want to print an a1 poster.

Hi all I've just been given about 30 old pictures of various relatives by my nan with the promise of more to come and wanted to scan them in and archive them for protection. Can anyone advise me on the best format to store them in for best colour and detail? e.g. I don't want to use Jpeg as that would lose detail in the compression and at the reccommended resolution from other sites (600dpi) the file sizes are reaching 80mb each! TIA
