Hi, being a bit thick this afternoon - can someone please tell me how I search a census by address - and can I do this on Ancestry, as I'm running short of credits everywhere else!! Thanks Trudy

Trudy As far as i know you can only do this on the 1901 census. www(.)1901Census.nationalarchives(.)gov(.)uk You have to pay for this, either by credit card or you can buy vouchers at the library. Julie

If you happen to be searching in London, Kent, Surrey, Middlesex or London, then the 1861 Census on the 1837online website has an address search as well as a surname one. Sue G

Providing its a small village you are looking in you could use ancestry. From the relevant census front page scroll down and click on the county. This will bring up all the civil parishes. Click on the correct one. This will bring up the enumeration district discriptions. Check each one till you find the correct one. Then its just a case of working your way through the enumaration district. (I'm in the process of working my way through Shoreditch!)

Thanks for that Janet - but unfortunately I am looking in Northamptonshire, and not sure of the district yet.

Try putting the road in the keyword section. Alternitively give us the address and someone should be able to narrow down the district.

Thanks for the offer Heather - I will let you know a bit later as I am at work at the moment and don't have all the info with me. Thanks Trudy

Do what Janet said - its not an indexed search, but if you have any Piece / Folio type references you can home in on an address vs searching thru every Folio for a village. For Northants places - look here:- http://content.ancestry*com/Browse/list.aspx?dbid=7814&path=Northamptonshire

You can do an address search on 1881 by using the Ancestry copy of the census (which is free for anyone to search): - enter the county & parish in the 'Residence' boxes - enter the street name in the 'Keywords' box The first 'hits' returned will be any unoccupied houses in the street (with age 0 and name as '-'). This will give you the piece/folio/page number for the street. You can then use the 'view neighbours' link to view adjacent houses, or if an Ancestry member, you can view the image and use the 'next image' and 'previous image' buttons to move through the street. This only works on 1881 as the other Ancestry cenuses are not indexed by address. Richard
