does anyone know if it is possible to obtain the original birth cert of someone that was adopted if you know the original parents names. Looked it up on 1837 and the entry numbers have been changed - looks like by hand, but the original is still possible to read, as is the new one maureen

Many thanks what number do i use, the one that is typed or the one it has been changed to. Is it normal for all entries to have been altered if the person is adopted? maureen

Hi, Its not alway next to the birth entry if the person is adopted or not, out of 4 of us 2 had the new number next to them and 2 didn't this reference means nothing much though and just indicates the re-entry on to the Adoptive Register in their new name, but as I say not every adoptees entry shows this. I am not sure what cert, you want if this is the original birth cert, in their birth name you can go ahead and qoute this refernce number on 1837 and order it,(however, if does not gvie details of the adoptees new name). It would not be possible for you to order a copy of the adoption cert, unless you are the adoptee yourself. Best Wishes Sheila p.s. you will need to used the number that is crossed through.
