There are also Duck Boards which are like open slatted wooden things you put down in wet areas so the water runs away. You should put this on my 'Hold it up and laugh at it thread.'

Yes Linda, my dad was in the Navy and now I remember he used to have a picture of him wearing his 'best ducks' - but I think the Canvas barge cover is the most likely. Thank you to everyone for your help alice

Coastal barges would have sails. there bigger than inland ones

I think it is the canvas that is over the top of a load in a barge. Barges don't tend to have sails :-) Jess x

Yes Nell ! Have had a black coffee now! LOL! Thanks Linda. The census page I am looking at also has a barge maker so I am thinking it may be related in some way. Thanks Linda, will try that, perhaps he made sails or something similar

Can anyone tell me whayt a Duck maker was . i guess maybe he made duck decoys or whistles. i have googled to no avail! Alice
