I viewed the image online RG13 Piece 154; Folio 116; Page 53 Schedules 352 & 353. My mother always said that her mother was 'housekeeper to her father', he was a lot older than her, & his first wife was older than him, so perhaps she just died. Ive only searched thro FreBMD & Mormon sites so far. I'm not very adventurous. J

There was an article in one of the family history mags recently saying that bigamy was quite widespread as divorce was so difficult to obtain (and far too expensive for most people, not to mention the social stigma) that people just abandoned their legal spouses and pretended they were unattached. nell

Where have you looked for their deaths? Unfortunately those look like reasonably common names so I'm not sure how you'd confirm their deaths without ordering a lot of death certs! But you're right, divorce was pretty rare and/or expensive in those days so maybe they'd just 'moved on' and said they were widowed in order to marry...

For the 1901 census 31 Ashdown St. St. Pancras I have mygrandmother Elizabeth married to John Taylor & my grandfather Joseph Brown married to Jane. In 1906 Joseph & Elizabeth married each other (in St Pancras) & were stated as both being widowed but I can't find the death of either of their first spouses. Do we have something suspicious here, or have I not looked in the right places? Can someone help please?
