trouble with parish records

Can anyone help? I'm quite new to this. Went to Devon Records Office to try and find parish record for a birth in Kinsgbridge c1808 - no luck. Checked microfiche over and over - not even a name which might have been spelt slightly different. Is there any other way I can find his birth / christening - need to confirm parents names. I've tried IGI index, also no luck!

Sarah How sure are you that you have the right parish and the right date? nell

Maybe the christening was in a different parish. The following was derived from Parloc, are within a 5 mile radius: Kingsbridge 273 44DEVP Aveton Gifford 269 47DEVP Bigbury 266 46DEVP Buckland Tout S275 45DEVP Charelton 276 43DEVP Chivelstone 278 38DEVP Churchstow 271 45DEVP Dodbrooke 273 44DEVP East Allington 276 48DEVP East Portlemout274 38DEVP Kingsbridge 273 44DEVP Kingsbridge 273 44DEVR Loddiswell 271 48DEVP Malborough 271 39DEVP Salcombe 273 39DEVP Sherford 277 44DEVP South Huish 269 41DEVP South Milton 269 42DEVP South Pool 277 40DEVP Stokenham 280 42DEVP Thurlestone 267 43DEVP West Alvington 272 43DEVP Woodleigh 273 48DEVP Or maybe the family were non-conformists and baptised in a chapel etc. Good Luck Sean

Thank you. The 1881 census shows birthplace as Kinsgsbridge and his marriage certificate would suggest he was born in 1807 / 1808. I'll try those other parishes, thanks for the list Sean.

Hi Sarah Have you asked if the records office hold the Bishops Transcripts for the village? Sometimes they appear on there even if they aren't in the parish register. Jeanette x

Sarah a) he may have been baptised in a different parish - perhaps where his grandparents lived. b) he may not have been born in that parish, but thought he was because he moved there when very little. nell

Thanks for the tips everyone. I'll ask about Bishops Transcripts. He may well not have been born in Kingsbrigde - hadn't thought about that!

Birth places on census seem to vary, some time it is the actual village, then the district or the next major town - so many discpreancies.

Have you found him on any other census? He may have given a different answer. My great grandfather was b. 'St Martins' in 1881, 'Lodge' in 1891 and 'Oswestry' in 1901!! I finally tracked him to a hamlet called Lodge, in Weston Rhyn, in the RD of St Martins, Oswestry!!

If he was in Devon in 1851, the census is indexed for the county. There are people on the records board who would do look ups for you. Kingsbridge is a town, so he well have come from one of the surrounding parishes. Many of the Devon parishes have been transcribed and copies are available in the West Country Studies Library (where the Records Office used to be) in Exeter. The Devon Family History Society also has a library in Exeter: Google their website and see when it's open. You have to join to use it, but it's a wonderful place, full of indexes and trees.
