mine were puddlers in 'boro too but lost track of them after 1901 census. Lived over the border. Would love to find where they ended up.

Hi J, you already know I'm puddled too - my mind couldn't help linking paddled and wellies (Wellington) ...... well yes anyway. Still haven't found any other explanation but at least I'm a bit clearer now. J

Helen Just seen your updated message. Live on Cheshire/Derbyshire border, so not too far from Sheffield. I have not looked at this side of the family for a bit, so will dig it out and 'refresh my memory' and be back to you about 1841. Ta muchly. Jxx

Julia A Harriett Jones married 'my' Enoch Attwood in 1901 in Dawley. She was born Old Park c.1869. Not one of yours by any chance?

Helen My gr grandfather, Reuben Jones worked there, I think the iron works were in Haybridge, Wellington. Jxx

Julia My ancestors Puddled in Wellington and Dawley, maybe they were puddling with your rellies? You've not ended up in Yorkshire too have you, cos I'm in Sheffield and tell my kids they're 'puddled'. P.S. Got Wellington 1841 if it's of any use to you.

Hi Jan The word is actually Puddler (he works in an iron works), but I used puddled as I thought the sentence sounded better. But thinking about it 'puddled' suits me better as where I come from it means silly in the head.......lol lol. Jx

If you google 'Puddler' there are one or two websites explaining what he does in the iron works. Its easier to read them than me trying to explain. lol Jxx

I'm told by a friend that they still have a puddling machine on the modern steel works. Does anyone know exactly what the job entailed?

Its seems on my tree that a least three generations where puddlers at various iron works. Where did yours Puddle louise? Tudhoe, Staffordshire and Middlesbrough for mine
