Another option if you have spare time is to visit the archives for the town where you live. Most have the National GRO index on Microfilm of Fiche. It is time consuming but it's free, unlike 1837online. I've spent many an hour doing just that before 1837 arrived on the scene. The other benefit of doing it 'the old fashioned way' is that you often come across stray rellies whilst looking for the one you want. Kate :)

I think the Family Records Centre in Islington is the best bet. I've recently invested a few good hours in transcribing every Olley marriage recorded over a period of twenty years as many of the transcription services have gaps. And I'll start on births next. Of course my surname is unusual enough for me to do that, but if you can narrow the year down I'm sure someone like myself would happily go through some records for you. A post to that effect on here should get a response. Sadly I can't help for at least a week as I'll be in Ireland, but if you're still stuck I'll have a look - I work 5 minutes away from the FRC.

Hi Heather If its too expensive please dont look I wouldnt allow it. The last time he appears is on the 1901 census. aged 49, the only other clue I have is my dad said he doesnt remember ever seeing him. Dad was born in 1919 and never ever saw his grandfather. So it makes me think that he might have died before dad was born. Dad has looked through the list of pit disasters and there is Anthony on there but the dates are wrong, so its not him. Im off to bed now, but please if costs a lot of money dont look Very much appreciated. Yvonne x

Yvonne, you will need to give some idea of the date, even then it may prove too expensive for people to look up. What is the last census he appears on?

Both the sites you have tried are not complete because they are transcribed by volunteers. To look up a complete index you need 1837online pay to view or familyrelatives (from 1866).
