Jennifer, My gt grandmother had the middle name 'Byatt' It confused me for ages as to why. I thought at first it was her mother's maiden name. It wasn't. Later down the line however, I discovered that 'Byatt' was in fact her grandmother's maiden name. Have fun with solving all the mysteries! Helen x

Alternatively, she could have been illegitimate and Carter was the father's surname.

Thanks for your help, I'd better try and look for her on the census!

Often the mother's maiden name was used as the first child's middle name . Or if the parents weren't married sometimes the partner's surname was used as a middle name so it appears on the birth certificate. I've a William Stone Patrick, whose mother was Caroline Stone and father Edward Patrick. I've also a Mary Weaver Clark, who was illegitimate and her mother was Elizabeth Clark and father was John Thomas Weaver. Good luck Kim

I've traced some of my family back to Charles SMALL and Dorothy BELL. Their descendants continued to use Dorothy's surname for the next 100+ years. Confusion reigns: Another family from Alnwick carries the BELL surname also - and turn up in the same general area! And just to make things worse, there's a tendency to use the Christian name Francis for making it difficult to know which one belongs to who! Jan

Peter and Mary - thankyou! I quite like the sound of Carter-Wildon, i think it's quite posh! (unlike her many descendants, including myself)!! Jennifer

I do not know if this helps But I have two name anomalies in my tree The First is My Dad he was adoppted and the family that had him were in fact Ingales-Walker (So Mum says) and for unknown resons never put the Ingales bit on My dads adoption papers. The other and posable likely to help you I have a Simons line and part of the fanily History say that Webb was at one time part of the name and for some genarations it was common to find one of the boys with a middle name of Webb. Could your relle be just carrying on a tradition with Carter.

I'm trying to find information about my great, great grandma, who was born in Huddersfield c.1874. Her married name was MARIA MANNION (sometimes spelt Manion, just to confuse me even more). However, i was told that she was MARIA CARTER MANNION -formerly WILDON. What on earth does that mean?! Could it mean that Carter was her maiden name, and that Wildon was from a previous marriage (or vice versa)? She was approx 27yrs old on 1901 census, so if that was her second marriage, she must have been flippin' young the first time around! Does anybody know how I can solve this problem? All suggestions gratefully received! Jennifer Holt (just the one surname) Huddersfield
