from what i can see he lived there for 20-30 years - some work :D and he's down as the head

What did his wife do for a living she may have been the licensee? (spelling!) Claire x

in 1871 - mason wife then he remains a widow for the remaining years

It might help to find out who WAS the licensee. They might be related to him or his wife.

Was the building still being used as a pub Maybe it was it just a dwelling that used to be a pub and had kept the name? (hope that makes sense!) can u tell i'm grasping at straws now?!?! Claire x

have just put 1871 pub licences into google and it brought loads of hits back. some of those may be useful c x

There might not be any family conection between landlord and your relle. It was not unknown for pubs and Inns to let out spare acomadtion as small flats, doing away with the need to supply food ect but still getting the cash for the rooms.

Another thought did your relly have his own business and was it in the Pubs yard like the rooms, pubs let out spare yard space as well.
