Thanks Jess...but what does it mean, where is this info from, what year....I will start a new thread 'GC Challenge to solve a fellow member's brick wall in record time', to truly show how working together helps.

So let's test out people willingness to help others :-) I need any information for a Henry Gray (tramway worker) living in Sheffield pre 1910. I believe he adopted my granfather born circa 1904. I have no other information other than Henry Gray (tramway worker) being noted as the father on my grandfather's marriage certificate in the year 1928 (William Gray aged 24). Thanks, Andy

Hi Debbie, My son says the same to me (why not start charging). I don't have a lot of money, but I'm not as money obsessed as my son and others, and your boyfriend is right. Why ruin a good hobby by making it a job that then just becomes part of the daily grind. Kath. x

Debbie Report 17 Feb 2005 14:00

Kathleen That is just what my boyfriend says. He spends hours fixing peoples cars and computers and anything else they want done as he enjoys it. He dosnt get paid. I have often said to him why dont you give up your job and start your own business. He just says then it wouldnt be a hobby anymore it would be a job.

There have always been people who charge for look-ups, even before ebay. If you look in family history magazines there are people who charge for what a lot of us will do for free on here. Since I have a subscription to Ancestry, like many others, if I have time I don't mind doing the odd look-up for people. I class it as a hobby and charging would spoil the fun of it. Kath. x

Ciara Report 17 Feb 2005 13:07

I know what you mean, what they said was unless they find something they wont charge anything and its about £1.20 per search, knowing me and the info I have I would have to remortgage my house to pay the bill! Thanks Ciara

hi Ciara There are people on here on the records board who do look up for folks, I think you can buy the census disc..............I would be very wary of folks on ebay charging to do look ups!! Ann Ps: I just had a look, there's quite a bit of info in previous messages........type 1851 in the search box on the tips board

I have been on ebay to see if anyone was selling the 1851 census on line, and there is someone charging for searches, is this common? Should I steer clear? Ciara
