Did he join up just befor the war or some time befor as this will make a difference as to were to look for him. This is quite complex but to put it in a nut shell from about 1800 to WW1 how and were troops were posted changed sevral times and some regs that were say from york cold end up as a Devon reg wene some regs were amalgamated. So just becuse he was irish dose not meen he ends up in an Irish reg,

I was lucky and found my irish grandads records at kew. He lived in Durham and was in the Northumberland Fusiliers (Tyneside Irish) regiment. I believe there were a number of Irish regiments where there were a lot of Irish immigrants around the country. All I had was his name and someone kindly went to Kew for me and found him. Kew would be the best starting place - if you can't get there yourself you can probably find someone to go for you on the message boards. I couldn't find him on the medals list so don't be put off if he is not there. Good luck. June

hi jacky, my grandfather was born in soutern ireland and served in ww1, it basically depends where he lived to what reg. he was in. my grandfather was from Kilkenny, he served in the royal irish reg. but i was lucky enough to have photo of him in his uniform and i still have his badges. if you know your grandfathers name you could try the imperial war museum in london, or the war records department at kew, london. but be careful, i wrote of to them, but they could give me any details, as my grandfather records was destroyed during ww2. john

Please remember that anyone serving in the 'Irish Army' pre 1922 would actually be serving in the British Army so the same rules apply for looking for anyone. The National Archives, Kew, will have all the records but remember that only about 36% of W W 1 docs have survived, CWGC site will have records for those that died. His marriage Cert, birth certs of children may contain his regt. TNA have a list of w War 1 Soldiers so provided you are not dealing with a Murphy i would have thought that the TNA online catalogue would be your first port of call. Janet

Hi Jacky, I have a gt gt gt grandfather that was born in Galway Ireland and enlisted into the army in Dublin. He served for 17 years in colonial India, however he was part of the 24th regiment of foot (The South Wales Borderers). I don't quite understand why this was so myself but there is a good website called www(.)regiments(.)org with information on regiments. Hope this helps, Glen.

i dont think my grandad ever existed, apparently he served under the british flag in ww1, but he's irish ( i understand that bit), but i dont know what regiment he was in.would it be an irish one?if so any tips on finding the scarlet pimpernell? i have his dob + county that he lived but thats about all well and his name (obviously) im sick of it now being doing this for months and still havent got any further PLEASE PLEASE HELP ME
