Hi Suzanne, Yes there are trade directories and also adverts used around the 1900's (Barrett's Directory of Preston 1901)

To Suzanne - just checked my Preston Street map and yes Bird St is still there in the bottom left hand corner right by St Stephen's Parish Church. Jan

Joan - there are 2 great books on Preston by Nigel Morgan. One Vanished Dwellings is out of print but I got Nigel's phone number and he had a few -but that is on Preston pre 1840ish. The second which I found on one of those book sites on google is Deadly Dwellings - Preston 1840 - 1914 and I was able to re create the houses my folks from Preston would have lived in. Cannon St still exists today it looks from my modern day map like it is the main shopping area to the south of the city and east of Preston Railway terminus-many of my areas were demolished and the new university inhabits those areas today.I'll check my books to see if there is a mention of that area. My husband was working there for a little while so I sent the poor soul to snap St John's church for me if you need that. Jan

Stuart , Looks like 43(a) so may be it was appartments. Did find that theres estate agent on same road now so must be fairly central, but may not have been 100 years ago. Thanks very much for the offer and if you do manage to get a picture it would be much appreciated. Joan

Don't suppose you have a house number?? I'm getting a new Digital Camera tomorrow and it's the perfect way of testing it out :)

Stuart, Thanks for speedy reply. Just something to give me an idea of the area. i.e how affluent, as the head of household is down as jobless cigar dealer. Seems a little like 'showing off' to have a servant if theres only two oters in the house. (although saying that, they could be a big family, all visiting someone else just to confuse matters). Joan

What sort of information are you after, I'm in Leyland, just south of Preston and I can easily pop into the Harris library in preston to check out the local history section.

Hi, Can anyone give me any idea where i can find out info on the history of the above area. Have tried googling, but no luck. a great aunt was a servant there on 1901 census. (only 3 people in house including her)! Thanks, Joan
