Joyce My great-great grandfather was a beadle. I have been told they acted as town criers - not sure about that, but he did work as an assistant overseer of the poor and as a vestry messenger. The vestry concerned dealt with lots of things - poor relief, the workhouse, public baths, sewerage etc. Beadles acted as providers of poor relief to the needy and I think also were rather fierce in weeding out 'scroungers' from the 'deserving' poor. I went to Richmond recently and asked for the Vestry minutes - very tedious council meeting type stuff, but at the front of this huge book, pasted onto the marbled end papers was an accounts page showing that my gt gt grandfather was paid by quarterly cheque - he got £1. 6s. 3d as assistant overseer from the poor account, and £15.00 from the Highway & General Account. This was in the 1880s. I also found that my ancestor was in the commercial directories of the period as the cornoer's officer and listed as beadle and other job titles in these books, which were annual. You should be able to find similar resources in your rellie's area - either the county records office or local history section. nell
