what's a industrial school?

I knew someone who attended an Industrial School because he was an orphan. So not necessarily a 'bad lot'. I suppose it was hoped they could learn a trade ans support themselves. This chap grew up to be a teacher and then wrote a history of Swinton Industrial School where he attended
