adoptions pre-1910 - were they recorded?

Well, I have some information from his marriage certificate which states age as 24 in August 1928 and father as being Henry Gray (tramway worker). I presume Henry is his adopted father. William's profession was Able Seaman in the Royal Navy, based at Devonport. |

Unfortunately I have no birth certificate, only an approximate year 1904 and Sheffield. William Gray is not a unique name either. |

Andy a) There were no formal adoptions until 1927 b) adoption is a very sensitive issue and there is no information available online. Have you got his birth certificate? nell |

I have a grandfather William Gray who was adopted around 1904 (in fact the story goes he was an abandoned baby in Sheffield). Does anyone know if it's possible to order information about this possible adoption online? Regards, Andy |
