The Curragh(now well known as a racecourse) was a big army barracks near to Naas, about 25 miles West of Dublin in County Kildare. Templemore is on the borders of 3 counties of Kilkenny, Tipperary and Offaly, but without consulting my map I think is just Tipperary, and is about 10 miles North of Thurles. Thurles also had barracks and is in County Tipperary. Templemore had Army Barracks as well as railway and canal Junctions. Are you talking about County Kilkenny which is quite a big county, stretching from Waterford/Tipperary Borders to the south to Offaly going North or the town of Kilkenny, which is in the West of the County? County Kilkenny adjoins County Tipperary although I do not know of any army barracks in the Kilkenny area. Fermoy, County Cork also had big barracks and I would be surprised if he had been in Ireland and not done a spell at Fermoy. I suggest you do a google search on these places to find out what and where you are talking about. You won't go far with Irish or any other Roots unless you get to grips with the geography of the areas of interest! Sounds as though your gg father was involved with a few Irish problems at that time! So I suggest you read some Irish newspapers of the times, will give you much insight into what was going on in Tipperary, Cork, Limerick at these times. You cannot begin to find your Irish roots without some understanding of Irish History. Quite common for soldiers to be in Ireland meeting and marrying Irish girls. Have you tried the Regimental Indexes for marriage and births, now on line at 1837 online? I found my ancestor's marriage and a birth at the Curragh which started me off on my family history. Once you have found his regiment, a trip to National Archives, Kew will find all his records to include the muster records which will detail all the Irish places he was in. Janet

The Curragh is in Dublin, and was a large encampment for a long number of years. Paul
