At what age would a man leave the army in the mid 1800s? On my gr grandfathers birth cert [1845] his father is described as a Trooper in the 2nd Life Guards. I don't know where to look for him on 1871 census. Found who I thought was him at the address my gr grandfather was married from in 1866 but from the age it must be an older brother named the same. If anyone could do a look-up on the 1861 maybe that would help. Name is William Barker, mother Jane formerly Hopkins. The only marriage for these two I can find is in 1822 which seems too long before births. Sorry to be a pain but I'm going cross eyed trying to find them Vivienne

There are some real military specialists on here but I know from looking for my military man that men had to ask for persmission to marry and normally they had to wait until 26 if they signed up at 14 or 30 if they signed up at 18.

Hi Brenda, I'm hoping you are right with the above.I checked him out in 1861 on 1837 & found him as a pensioner with a wife of the right name. A cautious Whoopee! Thanks again Vivienne
