Find a Birth Date

If you don't know what his surname is, I don't see how you can find his birth cert as he would almost certainly have been registered with his original surname. Before 1927 there were no legal formal adoptions and therefore no paperwork to show who adopted whom. If he has a very unusual first name you can search on Freebmd for him as they have fairly good coverage of births up to 1910. Do you know where he was born - it would probably be near where he grew up, and have you tried looking for him on 1901 census with his adopted name - this would tell you if he was born before or after the census was taken. If he isn't on the census, can you find his adoptive parents which might give a geographical clue? nell

I am trying to find the birth date of my grandfather- about 1900. I know a lot about him apart from his birth surname and date. None of my relatives know this information and it is not on any of the documents we have for him. We have tried school and army records without success He was either adopted or 'stepfathered' after birth and therefore BMD records are of no use. His birth date must be recorded somewhere Any suggestions for a database we can tap into, please.
