How sure should one be before adding names to the tree. I can't afford to buy every cert but I have several folk that I am 90% sure of. Would you add or wait to be 100%?

There are no rules, no prizes. If you feel uneasy about something then you don't do it. If you're happy to do it then carry on.

Vivienne I only add things I am absolutely sure of, in years to come who knows who might go barking up the wrong tree (sorry about pun). If I am doubtful, I would put a query. But I always get certs where I want to make absolutely certain. I suppose if you have very unusual names you can be fairly sure, but I have only today come back from doing some research on my Smoothy relatives, to find two totally unrelated (as far as I can tell) families with this surname living in the same village as my ancestors. It's dangerously easy to jump to conclusions. If I didn't KNOW that my lot were originally from another area, I might assume they were all connected. nell

Thanks everyone,I guess I'll hold back a bit longer. Nell, the main name is Barker from Kensington/westminster so definitely not unusual. Vivienne

I wouldn't recommend anyone paying more than £7 for a cert - this is what it costs if ordered from the GRO - online address is: http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/ They only want more if you can't give the full GRO reference. It's also £7 from local register offices if you know the district, but they usually want an sae as well. nell
