Yes, his business was in Old Kent Road Geoff. I did think Charringtons when she told me but she insisted Carringtons, so I didnt want to argue! She says her mum (my nan) used to go in a Hanson cab to the 'Carringtons' office and pick up some cash in a bag to pay the mens wages out. She also told me - all this stuff in one phone call - perhaps she wont stop now! That her mother and two sisters went to a Dame Mary Datchelors school for girls and that her father learned to play a violin so that he could accompany them on musical evenings as they all played the piano!! I remember Nan having a Beckstein Baby Grand (how much would that be worth now) in her house which my mother kindly donated to the Salvation Army when Nan died!!! Ugggh!

Yes Lou, Im feeling a bit guilty really and its her 56th wedding anniversary today! Ive also had to break the news her dad wasnt a virgin when he married Nan! Found he had been married for 18months to another girl before. Thank gawd he was a widower not a divorcee, I think that would have finished her off!

Heather The wills index for when you need - there's a copy at the Guildhall. If you put a note on Lyla's Rainy Day thread on Records she works next door. She did a few look ups for me last week Lou

I don't know what part of the country you are talking about, but if it's London then the brewery is likely to be Charringtons.

Many thanks, guys. Got me credit card next to me now. Unfortunately the will wont be on the National Archives site as he died 1912. Ill order the death cert. I would like to get his fathers will too, as he had a cabinet carving business and his grandfather had a tobacconist/stationers. I guess that will be a trying to ask York office to look up? Is there an index anywhere which may tell me if there are wills for these three guys (all the same name mind you!). Oh, isnt it awful, but this has given me a little fillip this morning! Poor old auntie obviously thought I was getting too close not to tell me the info!

Your poor Auntie. She must be in bits, bless her! I was searching for some bankruptcy info the other day and I think it was Peter pointed me in the direction of the London Gazette (just google it, I'm useless at keeping web addies). They had some pretty good stuff, you might get lucky! Lou x

If you get the death certificate it should tell you the date if the inquest. There may be coroner's report but it would probably have been well reported in the local papers. You need the date to narrow down the newspaper search, though. In those times newspaer reports were very detailed and probably just as good as the coroner's report (if it exists). Anne

Hi Heather, You should be able to find a coroners report at least, I woud think you should try the local court, they may well have an insolvency report about the bankrupcy as well. Shaun

Help please guys, having a few senior moments in one at the mo. Up to now my only living ancestor on my mums side (in this country) has been less than forthcoming on info. This morning I was telling her how surprised I was that her grandfather (my GGranddad) had died only in his 50's in 1912 when his ancestors had been well into late 70's and 80's - there is even a 96 year old in the 1881! Very sheepishly she tells me he committed suicide following bankruptcy of his business supply beer barrels to Carringtons Breweries. Now! I know this means I can get a lot of info but what/where/how. I guess there would be an inquest, yes? A bankruptcy notice? A death cert with this info? Possibly a Will written before he was bankrupt? Can anyone advise as my head is buzzing from this info and now I realise why she had been slow in helping me.
