If you haven't already got it, it would be worth keeping this address on your favourites list: http://www.yorkshirebmd.org.uk/ Like all the transcription sites, it isn't complete yet, but it's growing. And there are instances of records which didn't get through the quarterly transcription process to appear in the GRO index. Christine

Hi david Thanks for offering to look. On the 1851 census it says they were born in leeds. This is the only census i have found them on. They seemed to have vanished from all the rest. I thought possibly they were born in ireland because thats where most of the family started from and its says the parents where both born ireland. I actually havent a copy of the marriage cert, i have just oredered it so i will have to wait and see.

My GGPx2 didnt marry until 17 years after their first kiddie! Cant imagine why they suddenly decided to marry after all that time, I have the certificate so it is definitely them. I noticed one of the children died shortly before so maybe that was the impetus or may be they had got religion?

Hi Norma It's not uncommon to find ancestors who didn't marry until after the birth of one or more of their children. As Margaret says, one possibility is that the father or mother was already married - i.e. they had to wait. Another is simply the expense involved. It sounds like you have a copy of the 1840 marriage certificate which will tell you whether the bride was a spinster or widow. If spinster, you can assume that the first two children would have been registered under their mother's maiden name UNLESS the father is named on their birth certs. If widow, they may have been the product of the earlier marriage. The marriage certificate should indicate their mother's previous married and maiden names. Turning to the question of where they were born. You say 'it says' they were born in Leeds. What does? You also say that you think they were actually born in Ireland. Why? If you provide some names I'll be happy to see if anything turns up on BIVRI. Regards Dave

Norma I have in my family where the couple married after being together years because one of them was already married to someone else and had to wait for that person to die before they were free to marry. Margaret

My ggrandad had a brother born c1836 and a sister born c 1833. They had the surname of the father but the parents didnt marry until 1840. It says they were born in leeds yorkshire but i cant find no records i believe they were born in ireland. Would they have actually been the fathers children and why did they wait so long to marry. They married in 1840 just before my ggrandad was born in 1841. mmmmm what do you think. Thanks.
