It's not unusual for two children in teh same family to have the same christian name. Normally its if one child dies then it was thought of as good luck to name the next child after them Similarly if one child was ill/expected to die and a child of the same sex was born then they would be named after the older sibling. I have in my tree two Emmas. One was born in the year that three of her older siblings died of Scarlet Fever so I've no doubt the older Emma was ill and expected to die and her sister was born and named after her but she survived Zoe

Val, It was quite common in some families to reuse the same name if a child died. Sounds like that happened with yours. Crista

Val Am I understanding correctly that you have birth certificates for both Isabella's and both girls were born to the same parents? The younger Isabella is on the census but not the older one? Where have you tried to find a death for the older girl? Lou

Val

Val Report 11 Feb 2005 20:21

The mothers maiden name is same in both births and on the 1881 cencus Isabella is 16yrs she would be 17yr in the september so this one was born 1864 and the other one would have been 24yrs as she was born 1857

could the second one,(or is it the first) that dose not fit the dates you have be a foster child for another family member, as its is unusule two find children with the same name in one family. The other posabilaty is that the second child was just viseting at the time of the census.
