Part of your problem here is which name is right, I would say looking at the way Cawley could easly be heard as Cowley That you are after a Cawley As if it were the other way yuor ansestor would eather have to have been born with a silver spoon in her mouth or she was more of a snoob than H. Bucket (Bouquet) to get it to sound like Caw insted of Cow

Nudged for the weekend brigade. I'm beginning to think that an alternative spelling must be needed!

Confirmed her father on the marriage certificate dated 30/4/1893 in Stepney IS James Cawley, Labourer and her age is given as 33.

I should be here til late otherwise I'm workinng tomorrow so I can have a root round ancestry then for you so far the closest I've found is a Mary Ann Cowley aged 10 born Oldbury working as a servant in 1871 but I'd like to try and trace her father cos she may show up with her first name mistranscribed.

I'll double check her father's name/occupation when I get home (probably not until about 8pm) From memory I'm pretty sure it's James and a labourer.

Brian whats the name and occupation on the marriage cert for Hannah/Annie's father?

I know James's birthplace was Lympne in Kent, near Hythe. James A born Gravesend is my maternal grandfather. The only Annie Maria Cowley I can find on Freebmd is in Bromsgrove in 1864. Don't know if that's near Oldbury and it would make her too young.

I got a certificate yesterday, ggrandfather's (James Francis Sherwood) marriage to Hannah Maria Cawley aged 32 in 1893. Trouble is, on grandad's birth certificate in 1888 she is down as Annie Maria Cowley! However, she couldn't read or write and it was she that registered the birth, so I think the Registrar wrote what he heard! The groom's father's name ties up (Francis Sherwood) and James's age (34) ties up with his birth in 1859. Hannah. or Annie, was born in Worcester according to the 1901 census but so far I can't pin down her birth. James lived in Kent and their children were born there 1880-1888. Any ideas?
