Christopher, dont worry about the wrong age. All the other details fit. I suppose you know that the image we see is actually a copy made at that time of the enumerators' forms? So the image with the 56 year old ancestor has been copied from the form completed at the door step so to speak. Easily misread from 50 I would have thought. I have a 32 year old on one image with a 19 year old son. This guy was actually 52 from all the other censuses but obviously someone has misread the 3 and 5 when copying the details from the enumerator.

I have found a family i'be been looking for on the 1871 and 1881 census, which is great, my problem is the head of the household,James Donovan is aged 40 in 1871 but 56 in 1881 how can that be.The writing is quite clear so i don't think the zero is confused for a six although on the submission bythe family all those years ago may have been misread i suppose. i'm not sure if i've answered my own query any ideas still appreciated.
