I'm doubtful its the name of the real father as the surname is Aldred which is the surname of the mother Paula

I have 2 certificates like this, the first was my Grandmothers Birth certificate it says Jack Davis, nothing was ever mentioned about him from her. then on her Marriage certificate it had her Grandfathers name. The second was my Great grandmother on her Marriage certificate her father was Henry harvey, so I searched for a year for Rose Harvey I found her birth certificate with the Mothers name and no father. So I am not sure if henry was the father or he just took her on as his own. Not much help I know but perhaps the name you have on the marriage certificate is her real father.

my thoughts are that he has invented the father to save embarrassment as theres no mention or sign of him any where else, however i will be on the look out in my future searches

Paula If Aldred was his mother's name on his birth cert, I would think he has invented William. But maybe his father was called William something else and he used the same surname as his to cover his illegitimacy. Proving all this is another matter! nell

My grandads father (Thomas Aldred born 1876 in Leicester) was illegitimate. On his birth certificate it just has a line where fathers name should be, on his baptism record in the parish registers it has his mothers name where fathers name should go and then occupation as 'single woman' I just got his marriage certificate and it has fathers name as William Aldred (deceased). Now i've heard that sometimes the grandfathers name was put to avoid embarrassment but his grandfather was Edward and none of his mothers brothers was William. Do you think the fathers name is likely to been made up or will it be an actual person?
