For many years the story about two of my ansestors being deported to Australia in punishment for the crime of burning down a haystack!!! has cropped up. I have recently contacted a long lost cousin through Genes Reunited who asked the same question, how do we research this?? Any clues would be most helpful. Happy hunting Terry.

Try this site to see if you can find any names of interest: http://www(.)convictcentral(.)com (remove brackets) You will need to have an approximate date and place of crime and then you can research the local newspaper either through the Local Library or the CRO or through the Colindale Newspaper Library at Colindale London. Once you have found them either on the website or through the paper you can then obtain their certs of Freedom online. Austalia is very interested in their convicts and there is much interest and a lot of help available but you do need some sort of date to start searching if you have a very common name. An uncommon name may be found more easily through the website. Janet
