Is there any way of finding out someone's occupation without looking on a census? Claire

Dawn, I think she was born in 1854 but after that i can't find a single record for her! the Harold Pointon thing seems to be a family secret that i've un-earthed! A relative of mine seems to be doing some research (only thing is that i don't know where she lives or how to contact her!) and posted something on the Ancestry board claiming that Harold was olive's half brother. The only thing i can think of is that something happened to Mary Ellen and that charles fathered a child by sarah ann it's all very interesting! Claire

actually clare, just had a thought, on the 1891 census there is the servant Sarah Ann Pointon, with her son Percy, is this also Harolds mother, if so, is your Charles the father of both of them? could this be why Mary Ellen is not on any census returns?

Claire, you don't say what age Mary Ellen would be do you happen to know, as that might be a starting point on census returns, also where was she born? you could do search on approx year of birth and place of birth for a mary ellen by the way, who is Harold Pointon? described as a son?? son of who? regards Dawn

Might she have had an occupation like a monthly nurse? Married women who were have a job that never lasts more than a month at a time, for that period live away from home and as servants in the household are more prone to error in their details than family members.

now i know it doesn't take much, but i'm well and truly confused now! i have a Charles Deaville b1859 married Mary Ellen Bailey / Bayley (spelt both ways on different records) but she never appears on a census with him. they married in 1880 and had their first child olive in 1880, joseph in 1883 and charles in 1886. i've got the rest of them on both 1891 and 1901 census and he's down as married but she's nowhere to be found. can anyone throw any light on to why this might be? fingers crossed Claire
