They were called codd bottles. If you go to Google and search on images for... codd bottle...you will see some pictures. You can make out the glass stopper on some of them. There is a codd bottle on e bay at the moment that has the embossed mark of the Batchelor mineral company that was started by my in laws family. I was really surprised to learn that a Hampshire firm got their bottles from up North, back then.

I'm not sure what the question is. He is mentioned here: http://knottingley.org/history/glassmakers.htm My dad used to talk about marbles in lemonade bottles - he called them 'Glag alleys' - I believe an 'alley' is a sort of marble. They were larger than 'normal' marbles, possibly about an inch in diameter (I used to have a few). I think they were pressed against a rubber ring in the bottle neck which made a seal. I think you had to push the alley IN to gain access to the lemonade.

If you're lucky he would have taken out a patent on it and you may be able to get some information from the records at the Patents Office. Try their website to see if they can help. Also, didn't one of the recent BBC programmes feature a patent search? There may be advice on the 'Who do you think you are' webpage. Good luck. Louise

My husband's 90yr old granny recently told of a family invention. I've tried the usual trawl through sites with no luck so am hoping that GR members will come up trumps. My husband's Gt.Gt.grandfather Joshua Horne supposedly invented the first glass marble stopper. I've got a very old business letterhead which shows that his business 'Joshua Horne, Engineer' was established in 1856 & had an address in Bank Street, Castleford, Yorks. He made Glass Plant, Bottle Machines, Stopper Presses, Plates & Marble Moulds. Does anyone have any ideas, thoughts please?
