I recently ordered a 1935 death certificate from Stockport. My cheque was returned to me stating they did not have the cert and I needed to contact Ashton. I was sure I wasn't going mad and Tilda kindly checked 1837 and confirmed that my madness didn't stretch to having misread the index and it did say Stockport. So this morning I emailed Stockport asking for an explanation. They have replied with: Her death WAS indeed registered at Stockport BUT when the new registration districts came into effect around 1974 (as I believe they did UK-wide), the TOWN she lived in when she died ceased to come under Stockport's registration area and all the records had been transferred to Ashton who are now responsible for that area. Thought I'd make others aware in case you have a similar experience in being told a cert isn't where you expect it to be Lou

Hi Linda I've experienced it before with ordering from different offices within Derbyshire but Stockport and Ashton are two very different places so it just surprised me! They're not even in the same county! Lou

You can use this site to check old registration districts - it explains where the registers are kept now and has a link to the current register offices. www.fhsc.org.uk/genuki/REG/index.htm nell

Thanks Nell The confusion was that Stockport still exists. Without knowing what town they all died in, I wouldn't know that they wouldn't be kept at Stockport and what now comes under Ashton etc Does that make sense? Lou

Hi Lou, I needed a certificate from Wortley? I had two different places for Wortley. One of them Leeds. Phoned Leeds , they said send it to them if they didn't have it they would pass it on to the right office. The certificate came back from Barnsley a couple of days later. Good result. Is Barnsley in Leeds? Wheres my map???? Kay

Hi Kay, Barnsley is in Yorkshire as is Leeds but they are not near each other at all. Wortley takes in parts of Sheffield, Barnsley and Rotherham as well as Bradfield where most of my rellies come from. Regards, Claire
