Hi all. Does anyone know when the first legal adoptions took place? I have just found out that my partners grandfather was adopted around 1928. If this was true, would there still be records of it held somewhere and can we access them? Any help will be much appreciated. Regards, Claire

Hi Claire I thought the first legal adoptions were about 1929. I have an email about it somewhere I think. I'll just go look. Kate I was a little out, couldn't find my email but googled this: Adoption as a legal process was begun in England and Wales on 1 January 1927. Anyone 'adopted' before that date was really fostered, and the paragraphs which follow do not apply to them. (Tracing the birth parents of a fostered child, especially if there was a change of surname, is a very difficult and specialist exercise.) This is from this website (remove the brackets): http://www(.)ffhs(.)org(.)uk/General/Help/Adopted(.)htm Cheers Kate
