Hi Aileen, how are you?! Unfortunately most cemeteries are not yet fully computerised, and are not able to do a surname search. All their records are in 'date of burial' order. The only way really is to get the death cert for one of a married couple, then locate the grave, which may give you more family members buried in the same plot. Also make sure you look around at the nearby graves as different branches tended to be buried near each other. Happy hunting! Maz. XX

Hi Aileen Unless you have an actual place of death it would be very difficult for the cemetary department to find out where they are buried. Here in Hull the burial and cremation records are held at the crematorium. I knew a couple of my rellies had died in Hull but had no idea where they were buried. By telling the cemetary department where they were last living they were able to give me an idea of which cemetary they would be buried in. I then made an appointment to search the burial records for the appropriate cemetary. Once I had a plot number I made an appointment for someone to meet me at the cemetary to show me where the plot was. Of course if your rellies lived in a small village it is quite easy just to have a walk round yourself and see what you can find. But don't forget that some of our ancestors weren't well off enough to afford a headstone, or some headstones are missing due to wear and tear or vandalism. Again this would mean getting in touch with the relevant cemetary department. Jeanette x

How do you find out where they died without getting a death certificate? What I thought I could do is write to the 3 cemeteries where I think my families are buried and ask if they have anything listed under the surnames- they are quite unusual ones. I gathered that I may be able to find rellies I never knew existed by doing it this way but if you have to state an ACTUAL person then it wouldn't work Aileen

Aileen, What I have done is found out where mine died, then look up on google at the cemetaries that are near and emailed them to see if they have the person I want ,buried there, they have been very helpful on quite a few times they have told me that there is a head stone there or given me a map of where to find one, they will also come and meet you, that is what I am doing next going up to Halifax, as I was given grave details and they will be someone to meet me to show me where to go they even had someone to go and look to see if there was a head stone.......... so try this Sue..............

Last week I visted a cemetery for info on a gravestone. As I knew the grave and its location there were no hiccups. This made me realise that I've no idea where the majority of my family are buried i.e. actual cemeteries, although I can hazard a guess at the areas where they may have been. Does anyone know if there is a register of surnames at cemeteries where the public can check this info or would do you have to write direct....I know I can phone and ask but just wanted to see how others go about this :o) Thanks Aileen
