Thanks everyone for your help. On the 51 Census he has a daughter Ellen aged 13 born Satley Durham then Isabella aged 12 born Harmitage Dorset. The rest of the family born Springhill House Durham. This should be Springwell ,it is on the other census also his granddaughter lived there until the 1960's without running water she used the well. I will try and trace Isabella's birth which hopefully will give us a clue. The census has thrown me as I thought he had been born Muggleswick/Wolsingham area. Win

There's a place in the Scottish Borders called Hermitage. There's a castle there and a very small settlement I think. Anne

Hermitage has links with Chester-le-Street. Try Googling Lanchester Hermitage. Maybe it was once a Hospital in the area?

Can anyone help with the following. I am trying to find the birth place of a John Scott. I have the following census information 1841-It just says John Scott 1851 John Scott born Harmitage Dorset 1861 John Scott born Hermitage Durham 1871 John Scott born Lanchester Durham He is not on the 1881 Census so presume dead. I grew up in Lanchester and have never heard of Hermitage in Durham. I have tried looking it up on internet with no success. I wondered if anyone knew where it was in Durham. I think the Dorset was a misprint. Thanks for any suggestions Win
