Hi, thanks for your quick replies, I have birth proof and marriage proof of the two different names - definately different! As to the taking of his mothers new name - well you have had to know him, but a change from a 'common' name to a double-barrell was right up his street and he also changed his childrens names - my husband has subsequently changed is back though. I have gone back 4 generations of his birth surname and found no problems. Wendy

Have you seen a copy of your husband's father's birth and marriage certificates? Are the father's names the same. Do the informant or witness have any of the known surnames? My grandparents marriage was logged with the wrong surname. When signing the register most of us probably just glanced at the page, rather than check all the details, so mistakes could easily be perpetuated.

Hello everyone, I have a real mystery on my husbands tree and need suggestions please before I am completely bald from tearing my hair out!!! My husbands father was born with one surname, then 20 years later joined the forces then married under another name, within 10 years of that his name was changed again, this change was brought about by his mother who got remarried, the only problem is there is no listing at all of her getting remarried or of this particular surname on any of the sites I visit, I have even Google searched because the name is unusual and double barrelled. I have searched both halves of the name and as a complete and can find nothing. I can only sumise that she told her son she had married this man and hadn't. The difference in name from born to marriage could not have been a miss-spell because he was very very thorough in his ways and checking details therefore this would definately would have been picked up. Any suggestions would be most helpful both to me any my bank account as I heve spent a fortune trying to unravell this! Thanks in advance, and a gin and tonic or drink of your choice to all helpers - yes I am almost resorting to the bottle on this one.........hic Wendy
