Richard Thanks, that should give me something to work with. I would have thought that there would be a 'definitive' figure somewhere within the Government archives, but I haven't been able to find it yet.

Richard in Perth

This should give a very approximate number of workhouse inmates. I searched the Ancestry census collection with the "Relationship to head of household" set to "inmate", and the "Keyword(s)" set to "workhouse": 1871 England - 59536 1871 Wales - 924 1881 England - 98193 1881 Wales - 4075 1891 England - 73047 1891 Wales - 2579 1901 England (incomplete) - 75443 Richard

Does anyone know, or know where I can find out, how many people were in workhouses at the turn of the century? There are many resources on individual workhouses or areas, but I can't find a national figure.
