can anyone offer any suggestions as to where i go next please? i have just found the christian name of my paternal grandmother; i never knew her, my father was born out of wedlock, and all i have is his birth certificate with her name and address on it. i know she had five children in all, only one of whom had the same surname as my dad; there were two boys and a girl who had the same (different) surname, but the youngest again had grandmother's maiden name. (sorry, i know it sounds muddled, i'm totally confused). i don't think she ever married, so why would the three middle children have different surnames from the oldest and youngest; and how am i to find out any more about my grandmother. i have looked in 1837 at all the possibles (working round the fact that my dad was born in 1918 and presumably his mother wasn't that old because her youngest son was born in 1936) so i've estimated her age at maybe twenty when she had him and worked from there. can anyone offer any ideas please? it's really frustrating.

What was her name? And where did she live? If you are lucky, she may be on the 1901 census. If so you have a way back and also a birth year.

Shelagh What you are saying, I think, is that your father's mother had five children: your dad b. 1918 another child with your dad's surname (which is grandmother's maiden name) three middle children sharing different surname youngest one with your grandmother's maiden name b. 1936. Have you got the 3 middle children's birth certs and do they all share the same father? I assume your dad's cert and the youngest one's cert won't have a father's name on it. nell
