my grandad was born in reigate surrey and lived in redhill, reigate and kington surrey for about 20 years. i believe william martin died in redhill in the 1970's but that is hearsay.

i hadnt thought to look to be honest with you nell. its worth a go. it is so frustratin. apparently my grandad wouldnt tlk about any of it,so my dad and other uncles know nothing about it. its still interesting though and ive found alot of other family members on the way. ill have alook on family search under that name you mentioned. thanks a lot

Have you found William or Lilian on the 1901 census? If the name was changed by William he might have his original name on the census - if it was changed by his father, if you can find William's birth place & date from the census you can look for his certificate. This may be barking up the wrong tree altogether, but I had a friend whose boyfriend had a Ukrainian name - Martinuik (pronounced Martinook) - possibly Martin is a shorter version of a name like that? nell

thankyou guys!! my grandfathers name was Ivan Ronald Martin and he was born 21/08/1914 in reigate, surrey. his mothers name was lilian may carter and his fathers name was william ronald martin. it states on the birth certificate. 'lilian may martin formally carter' now i know this may not mean they got married. this is all i have. natalie

im really stuck. there has been a story in my family that the surname i have was changed by my great or great great grandfather who came from russia or ukraine at some point. i obtained my grandfathers birth certificate and the surname is the same as mine and it names his parents. again using same surname. now i cannot find anywhere a marriage of any sort between them. i am desparate to know the original surname but i have no idea what to do next.what certificates to request next. please can someone help this poor lost soul???
