The date on the birth cert copy is written as 'April' not '4' so no chance of a mistake there. ann Glos

Thanks for that. I did wonder about the baptism certificate as it is a certified (handwritten of course) copy and therefore a mistake could have been made. I suppose if I could trace them on the censuses it might help. As you say the big mystery is the dates of the 2 Anns not matching. Ann Glos

If the baptism cert is the only place where the name differs I shouldn't worry too much, as long as you have double checked your other sources. I have the baptism entry of my 3a gt grandfather where the mother's name is 'wrong', I believe the vicar wrote the name of the mother from the previous baptism on the page by mistake. Also on my own baptism certificate my father's middle name was written as Albert where it should have been Arthur. I gess the vicar misread his own writing when copying his notes into the register and onto the certificate.

Over the weekend my sister presented me with a scrap book she had found among my Father's effects 3 years ago when he died (I know, it took her a while!) In this he has pasted several certificates among other things (some of which I have got having paid £7 for them!!!) Some solve a few queries but one has caused me real problems. This is a baptism certificate for my Gt Gt Grandmother Ann(e) Webster who married William Duffin in June 1857 in Botley Hampshire aged 27. Anne parents William and Elizabeth Webster Baptised at Highgate Chapel parish of Hornsey (I think) County of Middlesex. 2 April 1830 a true copy extracted 2 February 1859 I had always believed Ann's Mother's name to be Ann also as I have a letter written to Mrs Ann Webster from Elizabeth Langford regarding Webster (Ann's husband) who was ill, they are obviously her servants. This letter was given to my father by his Mother who would be Ann's Grandaughter. The 1881 census of my Gt grandparents gives Ann's place of birth as Highgate. (And calls her Annie) William and Ann's first child was called Elizabeth. Elizabeth called her first child Annie Elizabeth The IGI has William and Ann Webster having eleven children giving birth and baptism dates and all with batch and source numbers. The only Ann is Ann Zillah Webster born June 1830 and christened September 1830. Is it likely that Ann(e) and Elizabeth are the same person? Who could Ann Zillah have been then? What are my next steps. I have been hunting for the birth confirmation for ages and now I seem to have gone 2 steps forward and 3 back. Instinct tells me that they are the same person but, other than a visit to the record office (and which one?) which is quite a drag from Gloucester, does anyone have any ideas? PLEASE!!!! Ann Glos
