OK this gets complicated sorry if I bore you but have to tell you. I finally found the right Fowler family because I found my grandmother staying with them on 1901 census. But listen to this: Elizabeth Nightingale born 1839 married Charles Fowler. 1871 Census Elizabeth is at moms, married, no husband there but cannot find him on the census and the neighbours are named Beavons. Cannot find either of them on the 1881. I find my grandmother on the 1901 census listed as niece staying with James and Elizabeth Beavons. Elizabeth is the same age as Elizabeth Fowler. Find the marriage of James Beavons and Elizabeth Fowler in 1875 on freebmd. Looks as if Charles died, Elizabeth then married James Beavons but why is my grandma shown as a niece when Elizaabeth is in fact her grandmother. I'll have to get the marriage cert of Elizabeth and James to find out if I am right.

Pat Who are your grandmother's parents and what relationship are they to Elizabeth/James or Elizabeth/Charles? Remember the relationship is always shown as to the head of the household, so it would be your grandmother's relationship to Charles, not Elizabeth. nell

My grandmother was Martha Elizabeth Smith. Daughter of John Edward Smith and Ann Fowler. Ann Fowler was the daughter of Charles Fowler and Elizabeth Nightingale. So if I am right and Elizabeth Beavons was formerely Fowler nee Nightingale she is my grandmas, grandma. I cannot yet find any other relationship to the Beavons family. Or maybe it was easier to say niece for James Beavons than Step grand daughter. They also had another niece with them-Annie Fowler whom I suspect is actually Elizabeth Beavons daughter.

Yes thats them thanks. I still need to ascertain that Elizabeth was formerley Fowler so I'll have get the marriage cert. Regarding the niece Annie above message it can't be Elizabeth Beavons daughter as She had an 8 year old Annie in 1871.

Have also found them in 1891 - Elizabeth was a grocery shopkeeper and they lived in 49 Warwick Street (shop) - no more children - just elizabeth aged 10.

Think you should go with your hunches, and don't take the words on the census too literally - I had a hunch my John Butler was dead before the early 1840's - turns out he died in 1834, and his widow married again in 1839. On one of the censuses, John Butler's children are described as sons and daughter in law to their stepfather when in fact they should have been described as stepsons and daughter.
