I'm trying to find my husband's great grandmother. I can't find her at all. I'm hoping someone else possibly could? Her name was Alice Janet Earwicker. She was born in 1875. I have found her birth on freebmd, Q December, 1875, district of Bath, Somerset. That's all I have found though. I can't find her on the 1881, 1891 or 1901. She married Samuel Nelmes but annoyingly, I can't find the marriage. (my husband's great grandfather) I've seen her death certificate, Alice Janet Nelmes, died 1967 aged 91yrs. I know she had 6 children. All born in the Bristol area. I also believe my husband's grandmother, Elizabeth Mary Ann Nelmes was the youngest child, she was born in 1915. I've also been told that Alice's oldest child, George, was born pre the marriage to Samuel. So if he wasn't his, he was either illigetimate or Alice married before she married Samuel maybe? I'm just really fustrated I can't find her anywhere. I know the next step is to get her birth cert to find out her parents names (which I will do, when funds allow!) but I am just hoping that someone could find her or even give me some tips etc. Many Thanks Helen x

I've just had a thought. Sorry. I actually think the children were all born in Swindon, not Bristol, sorry. Yes I have a feeling this name has definitely being mis-transcribed. I'll keep looking!

There is a marriage of an Alice on freebmd for March Q 1899. Can you find Alice in 1901 with either of the names shown with the same registration? You might then be able to find the marriage of Alice (with her married name) to Samuel.

Sarah, Thank you so much!!! I haven't seen this before. I didn't know Samuel's approx year of birth or when he died, so that is fantastic! It really gives me something to go on. Sorry I didn't reply sooner. I had to log off earlier, my little boy's not well. Thanks again x

All that information you gathered was great, but Riddle me this. G.G. grandfather by marriage is George Taylor. Born 1854 in Shooters Hill Kent according to the 1881 census. He married Louisa jane Blagdon in 1878. The marriage cert says that his father was also George Taylor and a gardener. The witnesses to the marriage were George and Fanny Taylor. My question is this Where was he before 1881 and who was his mum and family. I thought I had fornd him in Kent with a family of George (father) Frances (mother) brother William and sister Frances, but a decendent of this family said that there was no George junior as far as he knew. I sent off for a birth cert for George June 1853 Greenwich 1d page 479 but this is not him either, his father is not George. What now!!! Regards Jan in Oz
