I have a marriage certificate for a John Albert Briggs and Rose Butler and I was hoping to find John's Fathers name on it but where his fathers name should be there is just a line through it and his occupation. I have searched for John Albert Briggs born in 1914 and have found four of them on 1837. How am I going to find out which one is the right one with out his fathers name? any advice please? Angela

Oh that's unfortunate. Are all those on 1837 in the right area too? Do you know his mother's name? Before you buy any certs it may be worth trying to find his wife's family first then seeing if the families were neighbours or something. I'm quite new at this so not much help I'm afraid. Perhaps a more seasoned researcher will have some better ideas. Good luck. Jan

Just wondered, who were the witnesses on the marriage cert?

Peter, Thanks, I thought that's probably the reason, but no I don't know what his mothers name was and couldn't find a birth record with Briggs as the Maiden name. Jan, Thanks too for your reply, they are a bit spread out , but one could be considered fairly close to where he ended up, I have found quite a bit of info on his wife and even her mothers family, nothing that leads me to John Albert though, probably because it's too recent their marriage took place in 1941, it was a second marriage for both of them John Albert was a widower so I will try and find out about his first wife that might lead me somewhere. Heather, the witnessess were M.C.Couran/Cowan? and F.E.Franklin

Jim, I only have his age on his marriage certificate to go on, age 27 in March 1941.
