ANY TRANSCRIBERS IN KENT AREA?

Just wondered, as I am considering joining up. I've been reading all the stuff on FREEBMD, and it's alot to take in and make sense of, most likely easier once you are doing it no doubt. But I wondered if there was anyone nearby transcribing who would be willing to maybe let me visit and have 'real' look at what it's all about before I jump in at the deep end?? Anne.

Ann, if you go on the BMD volunteers link you may even see if any co-ordinators are in Kent. Honestly, it is just a case of being methodical and typing what you see, every comma, dot whatever - even if a man has the name Alice, you type it!! I am sure you could do it as you will probably get copies that are already typed so no difficult handwriting. You apply to join a group, the co-ordinator contacts you with a trial sheet and the programs you need by the internet. You do exactly as it says on the accompanying notes and send it back to them to check. They contact you again with any points and then you upload your work to the BMD site.

Go on, do it! If you dont like it, then you can just tell them and drop out - its not a lifetime commitment!!! Anyway, can you please do 1914 if you get a chance.

LOL Heather, If I could pick and choose I most definitely would be doing Oxford - I've got a crowd of people who keep disappearing LOL...........

No picking and choosing, I'm afraid. You would be transcribing part of a national alphabetical surname index.

Geoff - yeah I know - shame really, I'm sure if we could transcribe our areas of interest, the whole lot would get done a lot quicker LOL...... Been having a look around, and have come across Sussex OPC looking for volunteers - what's the difference between an OPC and transcriber???

It looks like you would need a micro fiche reader for that, doesnt it.

Yes Heather it does. But at least I have found at more of what is available - I didn't realise that you could request info from OPCs - been doing this 8 months and still learning LOL...........
