Helen, What are you trying to find and where? If it's in a census you can be devious by putting first name, age and place of birth---no surname. That way I found John Rowe listed as John BOWE---would never have thought of that. But I knew his age [within a year or so], his p.o.b. and where he was likely to be. Up popped John Bowe!! Right age and occupation, p.o.b. and in Swindon where his first child was born. It may take a while but they are there somewhere [or they are usually---I still have a family lost in 1881, no matter how devious I am---they must have been out of the country!!}.

Helen If you're talking about finding them on census, they could be under anything! My Turner's have been Tanner/Toner/Turton My Hawkridge's have been Hawkrigg/Hawkbridge Sometimes its easier to search just under their christian name and year and place of birth and then go thru the list till you spot something that could be a mistranscription of the name you are looking for. Atack was Stacks the other day! Lou

Does anyone know if there is a web site where I can find lists of alternative spellings of names? e.g. What else can I look for , for the name of Povey?
