Just gone back to have another look at the image on the 1871 and I still think it says 'sister not 'visitor'. On the line below, the occupation is Shoe Maker and the 'S' and 'er' look the same. Think I'll go with the same father with younger second wife idea. Sounds possible. Until I can find the marriage of Elizabeth to William Clare and order the cert I can't go any further anyhow. Thanks for all your help everyone Helen

Even though she is 'visitor' she could still be related. I have quite a few rellies who are classed as 'visitor' when I KNOW they are related in some way (sister, aunt etc.) Wendy

Looking now at the actual image I'm leaning towards agreeing with Tony, it does look more like visitor than sister. Looks like she could have just been a friend of Annie's there for the night! Lou

Julia's father married a second, younger, wife the mother of Elizabeth? That could explain the age gap. Kathleen

OK, IGI has Julia HOWARTH marrying Timothy O'BRIAN in Manchester 1836. Still not sure I understand.....

I'm going to check IGI/BMD for Julia A Howard or Julia A marrying a Howard and see if anything looks hopeful. I wondered maybe if Elizabeth was Julia's daughter from a previous marriage and Annie was the dead husband's daughter from a previous marriage and the emunerator was confused?

Could Annie and Elizabeth be the sister's and the enumerator just made a mistake with the relationship to the Head of the House? Mind you, different surnames so that doesn't really work.... Have you located a birth or marriage for Julia to see whether her age has been transcribed correctly?

In 1881 Elizabeth Clare was married to William and living in Newcastle, DOB c.1845, place of birth Manchester. I have their eldest daughter Louisa's birth certificate from 1875 and Elizabeth's maiden name was Howard. I have found William Clare in 1871 with his parents so know they married after this date but can't trace the marriage. I'm trying to find Elizabeth in 1871. The one that looks most likely is this family in Manchester - Julia A O'Brien 60 widow Annie O'Brien 26 dau unmarried Elizth Howard 26 sister unmarried all born Manchester I'm a bit puzzled how Julia and Elizabeth can be sisters given the age gap of 34 years. I've checked the image and that is what is written. Can anyone give me a second opinion as to what else the relationship might be?
