Whats a Higgler?

An Olde Crone Report 4 Feb 2005 18:51

H.E. Bates (I think!) wrote a short story about a Higgler. According to the story, a higgler was a Peddler who visited outlying country districts, selling ribbons, saucepans, patent medicines etc. He would often accept payment in eggs or chickens or other farm produce which he would then sell on to someone else. As far as I can remember, in the story, he took payment of a different kind nudge nudge - mm, wonder if my "fathers unknown" lot were on the Higgler's round? Marjorie.

Thank you everyone....if he was a fishmonger going door to door selling fish, I wish they still did that now, been a long time since i've seen a man selling fish from the back of van. Lynne

From the 18thC I also have it meaning a fishmonger. I think I got this from some parish records. Perhaps they just meant he went round houses selling fish! Anne
