Hi Karen, I think in your case I would go with the certificate as the ennumerator at the time of the census would have probably just written it as he thought it was spelt. I have some very strange spellings! Aileenx

I have the same problem. My grandfather's sister Elizabeth Greaves married George Hazell ( certificate information ) but on the census George and his family are Haysell. Karen.

I have the same problem as my gggrandfather called himself Samuel Day when he married his first 7 children were Days then he changed it to or back to O'Day so I have seven children in the one family with the surname Day and the other 7 with the name O'Day harder still is the fact that I don't know if there was a rift with his Father and that is why he was Day and then when he forgave him he changed it back or that his father was Day and so then ggrandfather he decided he didn't want the family name so changed it to O'Day. Some of the children that were (c )Day also changed their names later on in their lives to O'Day too so its a mess. on my tree I have them as they were christened but I know what you mean its hard to overcome, Regards Laraine

Hi again Aileen, You asked "How would I get a new id, just out of interest? Would I have to pay for another subscription?" Another id means registering again, and I guess a different email address. I can do this easily as I have a 'catchall' email - ie anything-at-myemaildomain comes to me... You wouldnt have to pay again if you didnt communicate with others. If you did get a query on the new id, you could answer it from the current id .... However it starts getting complicated, so Peter's approach is probably easiest.

I have the same problem, my grandfather "assumed" the name of his stepfather when his widowed mother remarried. Robert Juisti, became Robert Justice Evans, the two surnames don't even sound the same. I think Peter's solution is probably the best, even if it does seem as though my grandmother married twice. Thanks Peter.

Aileen In answer to your original question... I don't believe that GeReu can handle this. My suggestion is to enter your g grandfather twice, with each name, and then link both to your g grandmother. It's not perfect, I know, as it gives the impression that you ggm married twice but it will get both names on the site.. Peter

His children were all born under different variants including Bump and Bomb depending on how the illiterate mother registered them. However I believe my grandfather married under the name of Boom (not got that certificate yet) To be honest, it's only my research that has brought the name change to light as none of my remaining family knew this so I suppose Boom would be best. How would I get a new id, just out of interest? Would I have to pay for another subscription? Aileen

Did he have any UK registered events like marraige or kids with the original surname? If so, get another Id and enter them in there - see below too .....If not, then stick to the new name as all life events will be registered in that name in the UK. If you want to catch a broader range of people searching European ancestors - I'd setup another GR Id and enter just him there under BUMB.

My German g/grandfather changed his family name from Bumb to Boom and I am unsure how I should enter the surname on my GR tree in order to produce the most 'hits'. Tried recording the rellies as Boom/Bumb in the surname list but then found out by doing a check myself that if someone entered 'Boom' only (if they didn't know about the name-change for example) my rellies wouldn't show up which would mean I'd never be contacted. Is there a facility on here for cross-referencing ? Hope you understand what I am trying to say and if so, is there any other way round this? Could I enter them twice? Thanks Aileenx
