Family Myths and Legends

I'm sure a lot of legends occur because the surname matches someone famous. Parents probably told their children this a bed time story. My grandfather was always told he was related to Sir General Picton. I've looked into this an I'm sure he wasn't as he never had any children and his brothers all died without any male children. Well here we go! Firstly we are related to Dorothy Round the championship tennis player of 1935. There could be a bit of truth here as an Elizabeth Round was witness at my Grandmothers wedding. We are related to The Earl of Dudley. Well there is Ward - which was the name-married in but very iffy-her dad was a blacksmith but no got to investigating this yet, it is well down my list. We are related to Florence Nightingale. Again an Elizabeth Nightingale married into the family but she is a brick wall. Finally and I've heard this from many many old family members. Someone had the family history researched years and years ago and it got lost. The was a 'Sir' in there who was hanged. Now being as me and more than a few others cannot get beyond my 4x grandfather who was a boat builder I wish someone would flipping well find it.

Absolutely. I think my dad's mother's family tried to be a bit grander than they were - although I think they lived just above poverty level. One of them put "provisions merchant" as his dead father's occupation on his wedding cert - the man was actually a milk carrier. This same man according to my father - who must have had it about 3rd hand - was "in charge of Tilbury Docks". When I contacted the relevant information officer he found that the man had been (only for about 3 years) an assistant fireman there. Oh and a rumour that this man's mother had been a cook at Hampton Court - I don't think she worked for royalty. I think she lived in East Molesey near HC and probably did a bit of catering. nell

My Grandmother was the most almighty snob and never lost the opportunity to remark that she was the daughter of a Master Jeweller and that her mother had "connections to the de Traffords of Trafford Park in Manchester". My brother and I are crying with laughter to find that her father was, in fact, a Pawnbroker's Assistant (God, not even a Pawnbroker,LOL) and that her mother's brother rented a Pub from the de Trafford Estate. Anyone got any others? Marjorie
