My gg grandfather John Orton lived at 56 Marefair according to the 1881 census. I have just found an old photo of the area and realise it is a row of shops. He was a master confectioner and I want to know if 56 Mare Fair was a shop - and if so what sort and did he own/work in it -any suggestions how to find this out. Thanks Karen

try looking at the other address around his and see what there occupations where. It might shed some light.

If he owned/rented a shop and lived above/behind it, there will probably be rent/rates records and also possibly entries in local trades directories, which should all be in the county records office. nell

There is also www.historicaldirectories.org You may find that his business address (in the directory) matches his place of residence on the census.

Sorry, i wasn't on last night..and live in Northampton and can tell you a little about Marefare if it is any help. Marefare Runs from the town station towards the town centre. on one side of the road there is an ugly new building that used to house Barclay card but on the other the old shops still remain. Buildings back down the road are subject to preservation orders but am not sure about the shops. Would you like me to go and see what shop (if it still exists) your rellies shop is now? If it is the 'still standing' side of the road? Jess
