HI, My husbands grand father was supposedly named after the local vicar. (His family wanted him to become a vicar not miner)!! How do i go about trying to find out about his 'name sake'. I have already looked at Crockfords clerical directory and no mention on there. Any ideas welcome. Joan

sorry, my mistake. Hubbys grandfather born 1905, in Yorkshire. (South elmsall, Hemsworth), named Holborn tolfrey. Dont know if vicar was of that parish or the one where his parents married and no one around to ask. Holborn Tolfrey grandads given names, dont really know if this was the vicars full name. Thanks, joan

Have you tried looking under either/both/combination of the names on 1901 census to find your vicar? I had a look and found no Tolfreys, but I did find this: Alfred Holborn 60 Islington London London Wandsworth Retired Congregational Minister Perhaps Tolfrey was another person and he was named after 2 people? nell

peta, no idea of church name yet, waiting for elderly relatives to respond to questions. Don't know if they,re aware or not. Still waiting for certificates which may give more details, helen, Definatley after one person, but dont even know if any were his surname as may have both been 'given' names. Have had a quick look an census and tried names both ways. might just be a matter of waiting for the rellies to respond. Thanks for suggestions anyhow. joan

to crista, HOlBORN TOLFREY WATKISS is hubbys grandad, just trying to find his name sake. To flesh out the details a bit, would be nice to know how much if any truth in the family tale. It appears that H.T. was literally his 'Sunday' name as he was always known by everyone, wife, children grand-children and neighbours as JABE. thanks anyhow, Joan
